Comparison between Hester Prynne and Priya Bakshi

Comparison between  Hester   Prynne from the novel The Scarlet Letter Nathaniel Hawthorne and character  of Priya Bakshi from movie Kya Kehna

          

Comparison between  Hester   Prynne from the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and character  of Priya Bakshi from movie Kya Kehna directed by Kundan Shah.

If talk about the movie it seems to be very simple and smooth waving plot which has happiness and tragedy just like real life but the story line is quite difficult because before marriage pregnancy is something like sin in our culture and society and it has raised a questions in  to the mind of viewers  like:

 Is there fault of a girl only?

If the girl has been going through this stage than is it good to pass on judgment on her character without knowing about herself?

Why should we blame on a girl only why not blaming a fellow partner?

And if society has this much moralistic views than why didn’t they look equally to men and women?

She was in love with him and he was everything to her and to love someone is it a crime and if she has done a crime out of love than what about a fellow partner  Rahul he has left her alone and used her as a tool so is he a gentle man  ?

Was there any fault of an infant?

To  trust and to love is it a crime ?

 As im a literature student I tryied to connect a link between the novel’s character  Hester Prynne and Priya Bakhi

And I found similarities and dissimilarities too

Firsr of all lets start with the names of both the protagonist:

Priya Bakshi : priya means beloved one

Hester Prynne: hester means star  and Prynne if Hawthorne was familiar with the Sanskrit than it means  prem so both has similar kind of the meanings.

Story line of:   Kya Kehna  

 Priya is she was got pregnant by her boyfriend (beloved) and he lests her alone and was not ready to accept the child.And society blames only priya and keeps on blaming her and considers her as immoral girl. While she was brave enough to face the world and at the end she proves her points and she becames an angel so we can say that it was her journey of being or called adulteress to  an angel.

Story line of The Scarlet Letter:   

                   Hester Prynne was a protagonist of the story who was married but her husband was gone away from her for his personal research work and she was being waiting from 7 years. But now may be there was no hopes for her that he’ll e fails in love with come back. And after words she falls in love with Dimmesdale and get pregnant and now she became an adulteress for town people and she was punished too and later on in prison she gave birth to her only girl child that is Pearl. And she stands in a tuff journey alone and Dimmesdale also not able to give a name to child. And society does not even care for her situation and never supported her but later on Hester was turns herself as able and than she becomes an Angel of the town.

This was something magnificent how a person is changing not only the identity  own self but how a person changes peoples perspectives towards her. 

 Hester goes against the puritan laws and while Priya  against the 20^th century.

Both were immature and love becomes the reason of failing of their character.

Unborn child becomes  the reason of humiliation for both.

Love here is the symbol of Adultery and shame or sin for both Hester and Priya.

Both has faced humiliation of society. For Hester society has humiliated her and asked name of fellow sinner and for society she was a sinner but for her she was not. And she never reviled the name of the beloved.

For Priya every one was knowing the name of her fellow sinner. And  after facing humiliation also she was not ready to abort a child.

Objectivity:

Hester never raised a question that why only I should suffer or blamed ?

While Priya was 20^th century girl and she has raised questions like:

Whe only she can be sinner?

Why only women has to go through this humiliation?

Why only her charater can be fall In every ones eyes ?

Why there were questions only for her ?

The journey from “A” to “A” for Hester this  A never lived her alone and it not even lived her after her death and she was labeled as A. And her fellow partner was also having a burning letter A on his heart.

Priya’s  journey ends with  giving birth to child and she choose her best friend as her life partner.
