¶ Vertue.
Sweet day, so cool, so
calm, so bright,
The bridall of the
earth and skie:
The dew shall weep thy
fall to night;
For thou
must die.
Sweet rose,
whose hue angrie and brave
Bids the rash gazer
wipe his eye:
Thy root is ever in its
grave
And thou
must die.
Sweet spring, full of
sweet dayes and roses,
A box where sweets
compacted lie;
My musick
shows ye have your closes,
And all
must die.
Onely a sweet and
vertuous soul,
Like season’d timber,
never gives;
But though the whole
world turn to coal,
Then chiefly
lives.

George
Herbert (1593-1633) wanted to built a political career but gave up worldly
hopes to became a parish priest in wkiltshire. He belonged the “ metaphysical
school of poetry “. His 160 short religious poems were published under the
title of “ The Temple .” Therefore he called “ The saint of the Metaphysical
School.” The more popular poems of the collection are : “ virtue .” The pulley”
, “ The collar”,”The quip”etc.
Title
of the poem
“ Virtue “ is one of the superb
religious, metaphysical poem written by George
Herbert.”Virtue” means goodness of one’s heart,soul,personality.It
suggests the good principles or characteristics followed by person . so the
title is very symbolic and appropriate for the theme of the poem. The title has
the biblical & religious references. The bible emphasizes the quality of
virtue in a person, which leads him to the spiritual life . All the worldly
things pleasures die once, but the only living entity is the virtuous soul. Its
eternal , immortal. It may possible that one day the whole world will turn to
coal but then certainly the sweet virtuous soul will chiefly lives. Such is the
importance of virtue in one’s life , shown by the poet . The ordinary things
& lives have no value . Its only virtue, which leads the person from down to
up , from temporary to permanent This is
the central idea of the poem. Which is eroperly headed by the title “ virtue”.
Abc
In the
very first stanza the poet talks about the day. He shows the beauty of the day
by saying the day is sweet, cool, calm & bright and such a sweet day is
imagined as it, the marriage union of the earth & sky. But then the poet
directly talks to the day that “Thou must die” means you have to die at evening
, when the night will start , when the darkness will be spread at the time of
ending the day & coming of the night , the dew drops will weep for the
death of the sweet day.
Again in the second stanza the poet expresses the beauty of a rose. It’s
very sweet & its. Are very
dark, bright & shines. Though the roots of the rose plant are deep in the
grave means in the land or pot , it will die once.
Then in
the third stanza the poet emphasizes the beauty of the runing season. The
spring is very sweet , full of joy , It includes the happy days , blooming
flowers and boxes of sweets , But the pleasure we enjoy in spring will end
soon.
Ultimately in the
last stanza the best proves the eternity of a virtuous soul . He compares the
soul with the seasoned timber , which never gives up , its characteristics such
is a sweet soul , which never give-up its virtue . the poet says that it may
possible one day the whole world will turn into ashes , but even at that time
the virtuous soul will be a live & it will never die.
Conclusion :
So the poet has simply but finely proves his thoughts about the
permanantship at virtuous soul by comparing the death of the temporary
existence of day, rose & spring. He has used the regular rhyme scheme AB AB
CD . He gives example of structural parallelism by using. “ Thou must die .” at
the every ending line of all first it stanza . The effect of contrast be “ die
“ & “ lives “ shows the main id to poem . The poet used many adjective to
show the beauty of everything so its very short but sweet , metaphysical poem.
