Introduction of writer:

This one act play ‘Marriage proposal’’ is written by Antonn palovich Chekhov. A Russian dramatist. [1860 to 1904] and physician.

·       His Play Marriage Proposal: Anton chekhov is mostly known for his short stories specially one acts.Marriage proposal is notable one acts play among his work. It is a satirical play.·       Summary of the play:

There are two characters.

Jn this play Tschubukov and lomov are neighbours. Tschubukov is father as Natalia who is 25 years old and lomov is 35 years old.

One day lomov come to Tschubukov is house in his best evening dress. Tschubukov asked the reason for he is well dressed. He is very nervous and unable to express that he actually come for a marriage proposal for Natalia. And at last he became able to say his intention.

Hearing that Tschubukov became very happy and gets overexcited.After that we come to know that lomov has a very weak heart and continual palpitation.

‘The pulse in his right temple throbs terribly and the worst as all was his sleep’’ØDispute over meadows:

When Natalia comes, Lomov starts talking with her. He starts speaking about his land. He claims that meadows given to peasants as Tschubukov’s grand parents for temporary use.

Natalia denies that and claims that those meadows originally belongs to her family.They continues to quarrel over this, both sticks on their arguments.

‘’The marriage proposal remains aside and the quarrel became hot and chilly.”They started abusing each other’s family. Tschubukov supports Natalia and abuse lomov. He gets palpitation as heart.

At  last Tschubukov  ransacks  him  out of  his house and then speaks that:‘’Such a fool is dare to propose you [Natalia]’’

Now Natalia comes to know about marriage proposal so she screams to bring him back.

Ø Quarrel over Dog:

When lomov return they start talking about their dogs.

Meanwhile they also have quarrel about the dogs.

Lomov remarks that Ugadi is better than otkatai because he is short lower low. AndNatalia says that otkatai is pure breed while Ugadi is mongrel.

Once again Tschubukov takes side as Natalia. But as usual lomov gets palpitation and faints down.

After that Natalia screams to have him back.When lomov regains his consciousness, Tschabakov joins his hand with Natalia’s hand.

But they continue to quarrel about  their dogs. Even in that serious situation. That brings comedy.

But now the quarrel is a part as domestic joy.The play ends happily.

Ø Humor in the play:

Chekhov made this play  humorous and satirical.

He makes the fanny description as such human feeling like greed and possession. That we to forget the marriage proposal like lomov and Natalia.

He creates rollicking fun to the audience.

Ø Theme as the play:

Marriage proposal is based on a theme as human feeling like greed and possession controls human relationship.

But undoubtfully . This have been presented humoursly.

 The others shows what extent can this feelings take a man.

Ø Conclusion:

So the ‘Marriage proposal’’ is farcical representation as greed and possession. The play shows that human vanity blinds a person even to his best interest.Asserts is may take the form of pride and  social status but its greed and possession  basic human relationship.
